Parking and Porters

Street Parking is Easy!

There is loads of free street parking at this particular location in Chicago. No parking meters! No charge! We are not downtown, so the typical concerns about downtown traffic will not apply. The entire parkway in front of the site is street parking. Midway Plaisance is a city park, with wide one-way streets, and it's OK to park on BOTH sides of the one-way streets. Also, 59th St (the site address is 1212 E. 59th St) and 60th St. are also one-way, with parking on BOTH sides of each street.

There is a small parking lot to the east of the site. However, it actually belongs to the next building over, although we can use it as unloading space for the taverns, the merchants, and the five sets of royalty. It is also the handicapped parking location. Not for general populace use, please.

Furthermore, we will have drop-off areas directly by the front door, and our favorite local rapier household, the Thieves of Hearts, will be helping with the porter duties. They will help you get your belongings indoors to you can then go find a parking space and have less to carry.

Site Rules:

  1. Infraction of the established rules may result in curtailment of activities and/or expulsion from site without refund of fees. The Event Steward has the ultimate decision.
  2. All federal, state, and local laws apply on site.
  3. No fireworks or cannons.
  4. No firearms.
  5. Participants are required to make an attempt at pre-17th Century clothing.
  6. The event staff are not responsible for items lost, left, or stolen. Keep your belongings secure, the event staff is not responsible for any stolen or lost items.
  7. The building is smoke-free. Smoking is not permitted at any time within the building. If you need to smoke, please stand further than 15 feet from an entrance as per Chicago City Ordnance.
  8. Site is dry. (No alcohol permitted)

Day Camps

Day camps at the site: Day camp space indoors will be extremely limited, due to the number of historical displays and the reunions of old friends. Please be prepared to share your space with new friends and to welcome other people to sit close to you. (This is a great opportunity to meet some new people, actually. Anyone at this event probably has an interesting story to tell about his or her own personal history, too!)

Sunny weather: if the weather is nice, we will expand outside to the lawns of Ida Noyes, and to the Midway Plaisance city park. Pavilions may be raised on the building lawns. However, the city park has strict rules against pounding stakes into the ground--due to the underground utilities there. We really, really, don't want stakes the puncture the electric lines or anything else. Therefore, only pop-up shades will be allowed on the Midway.

Please include “XL crash space” in the subject line, for faster response.

In the Good Old Days, everybody stayed in crash space. If there weren't enough houses, the college students put up crashers in thier own dorm rooms. This was one of the best ways to meet the out of town people, and led to many, many interesting stories.

We are happy to re-create some of the Good Old Days for the XL Celebration. The Incipient Barony of Aryeton is pleased to offer hospitality to our visitors. We have five local groups in the Barony, who cover areas within 50 miles of the site. (In the Chicago area, 50 miles is the nearby suburb). Plus our friends in the nearby Shires and Baronies live within 100 miles of the site (easy day-trip range).

In order to match up the crash space with the visitors, please give us some of the following information: number of people traveling together, smoking or non-smoking preferences, animal allergies or preference, small children issues, any other special requests.

Also, please tell us your city of origin and your preferred highway into Chicago. Because we have crash space in all compass directions around Chicago, we will try to give you the easiest access, taking into account your driving habits.

If you're coming in on public transportation, we may be able to suggest an alternate route that is closer to the crash space, too. At least, it's worth a try!
