Barony of the Cleftlands

Archive: Pictures: A Scroll for the King of the West

His Majesty Pieter entrusted Countess Alys Katherine as ambassador to the West Kingdom, seeking Their aid in the coming War with the East. Countess Alys Katherine commissioned Baron Sir Ephraim to compose the text, and the Cleftlands' scribes guild to furnish the scribal talent.

Elena inghean Ronain did the layout
Guenhwyvar MacEwen applied the gold leaf and shell gold
myfanwy ferch Rhonwen calligraphed the text, mixed up period pigments, and applied some of the background colors, most notably the kingdom devices and the clothing/trappings of the three kings.
Nial the Wanderer of Bork painted most of the background colors
Kiriena Kirova doch' Rysenkova applied the detailing and designed the initial letter (G), which covered an ink blot that had been scraped with limited success.
Notes on the subject and materials: based on two pages from the 13thC French Book of Kings, as suggested by THL Guenhwyvar MacEwen. Pigments were used exclusively (no gouache). They include: vermillion, verdigris, viridian, red-lead (orange), (synthetic) lapis, ochre, venitian red, orpiment, titanium...
Also to note: the Western King is being flattered by his placement slightly ahead and above the Midrealm King - suggesting that he is a brave warrior.
The Eastern King's tabard is light purple, suggesting that he cannot afford the dye - and he is slinking away in cowardice. The Cleftlands and Darkyard shields are visible. A vorpal bunny - white for our Cleftlands' household - has decapitated one of the eastern scum (recall Monty-Python & the Holy Grail...). There are more horses' legs than there are horses - this is in the original pieces.
