And Here opens the Court of His Grace, Duke Syr Laurelen Darksbane, Baron Cleftlands:

And magically light poured forth from the heavens and His Grace felt the need to mention his first coronation at which a more spectacular timing of light occured... but no one was there... and Gladius piped up that /he/ was. But that story is for another time...

In the middle kingdom landed Barons and Baronesses have the privilage to exercise rights, elsewhere they have the right to exercise privilages. There is a difference and it's important, think about it. But one of those privilages is to speak for the crown.

His Grace called forward Gladius the Alchemist. King Bardolph asked him to present to Gladius a baldric for winning the title of Northern Oaken archery champion with well spoken words. Lord Gladius unfolded a few long sheets of paper and said he had prepared a speech for the occaison... "The competition was stiff and I was lucky" a smile and he folded the paper up again and accepted the baldric graciously.

Now Laurelen informed us that he was speaking for the crown, so with his voice, hear that of our soveriegns Bardolph and Brigh.

His Grace called forward Caitlyn of the Cleftlands and presented her with an Award of Arms for her service waterbearing. Simply put, waterbearers save lives. An Award of arms is not just a piece of paper, it is the recognition of status already achieved, of service. The fighter who needs water really needs it, this is not imagined or dreamed, this is real service.

Caitlyn was dismissed and His Grace took the opportunity to expound upon this theme,

Cleftlands is a large and active barony with an impressive group of fighters and as we get ready for war, start new projects or perhaps work on the ones we started for last year's war, or the war before that, or Pennsic War 18... if you have no interest in the arts martial, have never witnessed a battle or have no desire to be around arms and armour still take the time to watch one battle. In particular the field battle. Witness the moment of two large armies colliding. You will see fantasy at its hieght, the fighters have a good time and afterward relax with thier prefered beverage be it single malt scotch or coca-cola, they have stories to tell of that moment that the fantasy goes away. They really are soldiers on the line. You will see the best and worst of chivralic behavior in the battle, do not look lightly on the fallen.

The reason this subject has come up is that I've been asked recently is not this a glorification of war and killing? It is not. Remember the SCA was born in the 1960s, in the heart of the 1960s San Fransisco. We call what we glorify 'the dream'. It's not a dream, we're real. The fighter laying on the ground dehydrated feels real pain and weariness and when he is carried off the field that is real service, not a dream. We are not re-creating killing and warfare, we recreate tournement melees as they were done in the fifteenth century... well, we are a bit safer than they were but even they were not trying to kill each other. If someone asks you this same question, what are we glorifying, think about your answer. It doesn't take a calvary charge to make the ground shake. Watch the field battle, feel the ground shake from the pounding of human feet, hear the sound of two armies colliding. There are men and woman on that field as terrified as if they were really going into battle instead of a tournement. It is our duty, as commanders, to make certain that terror goes away, that they believe confidentaly and happily that they will come out of the battle whole, unscathed with stories to tell.

That is all.

Here closes the Court of His Grace

section break

And that is all for this week...

In service,
Milesent
