Barony of the Cleftlands

Archive : Minutes : 1-23-02

Nial called the meeting to order at 9:00 with a note to please remember that we do pay for the site, $2 are expected from combatants, $1 from non-combatants, nothing if this is your first time.

Nial would like to open discussion on the posability of renting out a third room for the children to use so they have their own space while we are still indoors, or other options to make room for the children of the barony while we are still in our (rather cramped) two rooms. See him if you have any opinions or suggestions.

Coming up- The January Event! This weekend!

Ephraim asks that everyone be friendly- we may be quite crowded as we will only have two floors of the Bohemian Hall. In the evening, around the time feast will be happening, we will be sharing the site with a Sock Hop. Ephraim would like to organize a small escort group for the sock hop folks, to help them get to their area and to share our gentleness and courtesy with these re-creators of a more recent period. This is an excellent opportunity for public relations! See Ephraim for details or to volunteer.

There was an event staff meeting after regular meeting.

Lord Timothy is Troll for the event. Feast sold out Thursday evening (last week). We are beyond the pre-reg date. See him to pay for the event, or just bring your money Saturday.

There will be fencing at the event - Snowed has declared that it WILL begin on time. That's 11am. Be there on time or don't fence. AND end on time. See her for more details.

Setup for the event will be Friday at 9pm. See Lothar to volunteer, or just show up.

There will be a Pun Competition, judged by Shlomo (no doubt to keep him from entering) He has dubbed it the "Pun-ted Years War", and promises a full description of the competition will be available at Troll, and there will be both single and melee combat.

The kitchen, as always, can use your help, especially between 9 and 11:30 am, when most of the prep work (slicing and dicing) will be done. Please drop by and volunteer your time.

A few spots are left for servers, this is your last chance to sample this feast! Servers get feast half off. See Devona to sign up.

Lunch will be served at the event from eleven to two. It will be simple and peasant-ish. See Christiana (That Chick) for details. She will need help, definately! Volunteer.

Scribes, please see Guenhywfar when you've done with your scrolls.

There will be a Scroll Blank contest at the event, with prizes! Sponsored by our regional signet in the hopes of generating blanks for the region. The contest will be set up where the auction was at Coronation. Please bring your contributions, or just stop by to admire our regional scribes' work.

There will, of course, be heavy weapons fighting... a Barrier battle starting at 11, a pool tourney starting at 12:30. There will be Youth combat if enough kids and parents are available. See Ser Nick for details.

The Middle Kingdom Rapier marshalate is experimenting with a new weapon called Side Sword. There will be a display of this new weapon after the fencing tournament.

Children's activities at the event: there will be oragami and mongolian rattles made. Please volunteer some of your time if you can, just a few minutes, or if you'd like to tell a story or do something with the kids. Childrens' activities will run from 1-4 pm.

End January Event Announcements

For other events, see your Pale or Nial, he has his copy ready.

Val Day this year will be a Tournament of Chivalry. It's well worth attending... see the Midrealm Chivalry hold the field against all comers! Or arm up and play wack-a-knight!

We are being polled. Nial has a copy to see. They're blue. Poll ballots must be postmarked by March 19th! Ballots sent after that date will not be counted.

Nial opened the floor for questions, which resulted in the following information:

There is a comment section on the ballots. If you are too verbose, chances are it won't be read. Be kind to the Kingdom Seneschal and the Crown and keep your comments sucinct. Also note that you will be signing these forms.

The poll will only be seen by the Kingdom Seneshal and the Crown. (Ragnvaldr and Arabella).

This is the exact same poll as any other barony recieves, we are not being singled out.

The Baronial Charter is finished, however it is not yet approved. See Nial if you would like to see it. The Charter is a separate issue from the polling.

Can you contradict yourself on the ballot? In a way, yes, the ballot asks If you are Confident in Duke Sir Laurelen Darksbane as Baron Cleftlands, whether you are Confident in Ithriliel of Silver Lake as Baroness, and then whether you are Confident in both the Baron and Baronness. You can answer each differently, it's up to you, you can also abstain from all three.

If you do not wish to pay for postage, give your ballot to Nial in a sealed envelope. He will send in one big envelope of those he receives. You must get your ballot to him no later than March 6th. Or send it yourself. He'd actually prefer people send their own ballots, but offers this for those who might be cash-strapped.

If you do not receive your Baronial Confidence Poll, see Nial. There is no other way to get a copy.

Those not within Cuyahoga county borders will not be polled, however you can still make your opinions known as active participants in the barony. Write the crown and the kingdom seneshcal with your comments.

You can call Nial at home during the day if you have any questions.

As of next Wednesday, Nial wil be out of town due to family concerns. He will be checking email and the Cleftlist, and myfanwy will still be at home. Rutgar and Darius will be running meeting in his absence.

Armorer's guild continues to meet Thursday nights, see Timothy for details.

Demos- we have a batch of them coming up in June and July. About 60 kids, day demos, some weekends, more details as they approach.

Archery- no practice this Sunday, we're assuming you'll all be exhausted from the event!

Also, Darius has the changes to the charter, specifically they are changing the ranking system to more closely match existing kingdom ranking systems in Aethelmarc and the East. There is not kingdom ranking system in the Midrealm, and the archery guild hopes eventually to support one.

The next Archery guild meeting will be the Sunday before Valentines day. They will be selecting their new officers and reviewing the changes to the charter.

Coronation Staff will have a meeting Tuesday the 12th at Muldoons at 7pm - get there early so you can be assured of a seat! It's Mardi Gras Night! (Ephraim noted that he needs to move his event so he can have staff meetings like that.)

Scribes' Guild welcomes Olwen as the new Assistant Guildmistress. Hoobah!

Brewer's guild will not be meeting on Feb. 12th as Nial will be in Alabama. However, brewing things and discussion will happen at the next desert revel, including discussing what gift the guild wishes to give to Their Highnesses.

Non-SCA Business:

Ephraim has pamphlets on a Hebrew Calligraphy class. See him for details.

Fitz has a car for sale! Nice! Reasonable! See him for details.

There will be a Hafla at the coffee shop on East 185th Street on February 16th from 8pm to 11, featuring many fine Cleftlands dancers and Nial's drumming!

Nial is organizing an SCA movie night at his religious group's meeting site. March 9 and 10th, bring a dish, bring drinks, bring movies if you got 'em, sleeping bags if you want. Should start around 4pm on Saturday, first movie at 6pm sharp.

The latest TI has some great articles! Check it out.

Aurora has a dining room table, chairs and a buffet for sale. See her for details.
