"The noteable facts concerning Nathan's victory are that: not only did he endure an extremely long fight durring the semi-finals, defeating the man who would later become his Prince; but most importantly--the other finalist (Alen) had to withdraw from the tourney durring the first bout of the finals due to heat exhaustion; he simply could not go on, and had the presence of mind to call hold and yeild the field with dignity. It was a Crown Tournament unlike any otherbefore, or since, because two men were undefeated in combat that day, but only one could become Prince." Note that Alen is now Duke Syr Alen, and a member of the Cleftlands When talking about Sir Talymars' first reign as king the Lay states: "There was one odd occurrence, however, when the Queen, Prince, and Princess travelled to an event in Rivenstar and were not informed (though they stayed with the co-autocrat) that the day site had been changed. They eventually found the site by listening for the sounds of battle as they drove slowly around the environs." The Prince and Princess in this were Syr Laurelen and Ithriliel, Baron and Baroness Cleftlands, and soon to be Duke and Dutchess. When talking about Sir Hugos' reign and the battles at Pennsic War 10 the Lay states: "One of the more dramatic things in the history of the battles of the Pennsic Wars occurred during the field battle when, after fierce fighting , a hold was called to allow the MidRealm forces to regroup (graciously by the EastRealm King). It was found that only fourteen had survived and they formed at the top of the hillock, across the road, above Runestone Field. This group was led by the Crown Prince (Moonwulf), the King having been killed, and included the Earl Marshall (a Duke), another Duke or two, a few former Kings, and other Knights. The group looked down where nearly ten times their number (NOT an exaggeration) waited. The Earl Marshal, in conference with the Prince, asked, "Well, Your Highness, how would you like to handle this?" The Prince looked at his Marshal and, pointing down the hill with his sword to the massive forces below said, "There's the short road to glory". The Earl Marshal smiled, formed the group into a wedge for the Prince (at the point), and said quietly, "We charge then". The Prince smiled also, gave the command, and as the heros ran to glory, they knew it was a good way to finish a battle." The Earl Marshall in this is Duke Syr Laurelen, Baron Cleftlands, who had just finished his second reign as King and had become Earl Marshall of the Middle Kingdom. |
